About the photographer

Carl Cascella's formal training in photography began in college where, at Harvard's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, he studied black and white and color photography.

To supplement these courses, Carl participated in George Tice's photo workshop in Aspen, Colorado. He was also a member of Minor White's graduate Zone System class at MIT. In addition to his photographic training, Carl studied drawing and oil painting at the Art Students League of New York.

About the photographs

The natural world- mountains, streams, clouds, and trees, inspired this series of images.

Some are representational; more are what might be described as abstract. Either way, my intention is to create photographs that convey a mood or emotion that transcends the literal. As you view the images, you’ll see that I have attempted to create visual metaphors to convey the essence of my subjects. I’ve also tried to imbue the photographs with a sense of both wonder and humor.

For example, the magic of the camera, lens, and light transforms a series of waves into a close-up of a spider web; the gnarled bark of a tree trunk radiates the colors of a rainbow; a swirl of clouds portrays one of those vexing political conversations that we resolve forever to avoid.
